For NGOs most images are photojournalism showing the work of the organisation, or staged photographs for IEC materials and the like.

Arjen van de Merwe has published in Elle USA, Irish Times, Aftonbladet. Dutch publications include NRC, Volkskrant, Vrij Nederland, Groene Amsterdammer, Telegraaf, Parool, Live XS, Fret, Slagwerkkrant, Ravage, Highlife. Malawian publications include the Nation, The Daily Times, Traveller Magazine, City Side Magazine. He has supplied images to major press agencies including AP (Associated Press) and ANP (Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau). He has carried out assignments in Asia and Africa for ao BBC, Unicef, UNFPA, Interact Worldwide, DSW, WPF, Marie Stopes International.

He won the 2007 World Aids Day Photo Contest of Blantyre Newspapers and the American Embassy in Malawi.
He is currently affiliated with Still Pictures photo agency in London.
He is vice-secretary of the Photographers Association of Malawi (PHOTAMA).
He is photojournalism lecturer at Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ)
